**Contemplating My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was about to commence my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being naturally shy and reserved, the thought of plunging into this fresh chapter was quite intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the academic year, I recognize the immense growth I’ve experienced—intellectually, socially, and personally. This year has been replete with hurdles, self-realization, and a lot of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Building Friendships: Conquering Initial Apprehension
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student perusing this, it’s probably something that concerns you as well. I vividly recall my first day moving into my accommodation—the term hadn’t even begun, and I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too frightened to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to the present, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals who shared my nervousness.
What have I gleaned from this experience? I came to understand that taking that first step—regardless of how uneasy it feels—is essential. If you’re not prepared immediately, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breakers and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, remain authentic. With a diverse array of personalities throughout the course and university, you will undoubtedly connect with those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Academic Obstacles: Navigating the Workload
Another prominent challenge was acclimating to the academic demands and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more noticeable. Being thrust into this unfamiliar academic landscape can shake your confidence. You might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Believe me, I’ve been in that position.
But here’s the truth: everyone shares this experience. If you’re grappling with a concept, chances are others are too. The cornerstone is to seek assistance. This is perhaps the most pivotal lesson I absorbed in my first year—do not hesitate to reach out for help, be it from your classmates or the faculty.
### Support from the Faculty: Don’t Hesitate to Ask for Help
Regarding faculty support, the assistance from the Materials department has been outstanding. The lecturers and tutors genuinely wish to see you thrive, comprehending the obstacles students encounter. They maintain open communication, addressing any issues we face throughout the year. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, yet I wish I had accessed it earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my cohort. This role provided me with the opportunity to forge better connections with the faculty, which has been immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to build rapport with your lecturers and tutors, and I highly encourage doing so. My primary takeaway from this experience is to capitalize on the available support. You can never have an excess of help!
### Concluding Reflections: Embracing the Experience
In summary, this year has illuminated that the apprehension I experienced prior to commencing university—and even during the year—was often unwarranted. There are abundant support systems established, from faculty to fellow students, ensuring you are never genuinely alone. I’ve also mastered the art of balancing enjoyment with the unavoidable pressure of exams and deadlines.
Reflecting back, I am proud of my progress, and I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead. If you are on the brink of beginning your university journey, my counsel is straightforward: take that plunge, seek help when it is needed, and above all, stay true to yourself. You can do this!
