**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt regarding the journey ahead. I was about to commence my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who naturally tends to be shy and introverted, embarking on this new venture felt quite daunting. In hindsight, I recognize a year characterized by personal development, challenges, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current outlook?
### Conquering the Fear of Socializing
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered early on was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, I felt so apprehensive that I remained in my room all day, too uneasy to meet anyone. Yet, fast forward to today, I can proudly affirm that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
What was the essential lesson I gleaned from this? Take that step forward. Even when you feel hesitant or uneasy, numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to meet others await. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied student demographic, you’re sure to connect with those who share your passions and ideals.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
The shift from A-level studies to university-level demands represented another considerable challenge. The academic workload was intense, and the increase in complexity—particularly from the first to the second term—was stark. Occasionally, I worried I wasn’t measuring up, especially when I observed my peers studying rigorously.
What assisted me in navigating this? Reminding myself that I wasn’t alone in my struggles. If I grappled with a topic, it was likely that others were too. The most beneficial action I took was reaching out for help—whether it was through classmates or faculty members. Seeking assistance is one of the most crucial skills to cultivate during your freshman year.
### The Value of Connecting with Faculty
A deeply fulfilling aspect of my first year was building relationships with academic staff. The Materials Science department is exceptionally encouraging, with lecturers and tutors who sincerely wish for student success. They recognize the obstacles we encounter and maintain open lines of communication throughout the academic year.
Although I didn’t fully engage with pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Serving as a well-being representative for my year allowed me to bond with faculty, an experience that proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to interact with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university life. My most important takeaway? Make the most of available resources and support—you can never receive too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this year, I have come to realize that the fears and anxieties I harbored before starting university were mostly unfounded. With appropriate backing—from both faculty and fellow students—those concerns dissipated rapidly. I’ve discovered that I’m never genuinely alone and that balancing academic challenges with an enjoyable university experience is achievable.
For anyone preparing to begin their university journey, my straightforward advice is: embrace the adventure, seek assistance when necessary, and above all, be yourself.
