**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and apprehension regarding what the future held. I was on the brink of beginning my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been a bit introverted and reserved, embarking on this new phase felt daunting. Now, as I reflect, I recognize a year brimming with development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where am I now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Meeting New People

One of the most intimidating elements of commencing university was forming new connections. If you are an incoming student, this likely resonates with you as well. On my first day in student housing, I felt so anxious that I ended up staying in my room all day, too apprehensive to mingle with others. Nonetheless, fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced.

The main takeaway? Take that first step. Even if you don’t feel prepared, numerous icebreaker events and chances to socialize will present themselves. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and values.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

The shift from A-levels to university academia was a considerable leap, and the workload escalated even more during the second term. At times, I questioned my capabilities, particularly when I observed others diligently studying and felt like I was lagging behind. However, I quickly understood that everyone was navigating similar challenges. If something isn’t clear, it’s likely that your peers are struggling with it too.

The best piece of advice I can offer? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or instructors, reaching out for help is essential. Learning to ask for support is one of the most crucial skills you can acquire during your first year.

### Engaging with Faculty Members

One of the most delightful revelations of my first year was the level of support from the Materials department staff. They genuinely care about students’ success and are always receptive to feedback. Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I do wish I had capitalized on it sooner.

From early on, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This opportunity allowed me to connect with staff members, which proved invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My key takeaway? Utilize the resources and support at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Reflections

Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety and doubts I experienced before beginning university were mostly unfounded. There’s a wealth of support available, both from faculty and fellow students. Most crucially, I’ve learned that I’m never alone on this path. Despite the stresses of exams and deadlines, I’ve discovered ways to savor my university experience, and I wouldn’t change a thing.

If you are about to embark on your university adventure, embrace the obstacles, seek help when necessary, and seize every opportunity. You can do this!
