**Insights from My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, uncertainty, and doubt about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being a naturally shy and reserved individual, embarking on this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year marked by significant personal development, hurdles, and numerous unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Trepidation of Making Connections
A major obstacle I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you’re a future student, this might echo your concerns. I vividly recall my initial day settling into my accommodation—I was so daunted by the thought of introducing myself that I ended up spending the whole day confined to my room. Nevertheless, as the year unfolded, I cultivated some of the deepest friendships I’ve ever experienced.
The essential lesson? Take that initial step. Even if apprehension lingers, there will be countless ice-breaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, remain authentic. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and ideals.
### Navigating the Academic Transition
The shift from A-levels to university-level studies represented another significant challenge. The volume of work escalated considerably, and the leap from the first to the second term was especially demanding. At times, I questioned whether I was keeping pace, particularly when I observed others studying with assurance.
What aided me during this time was the realization that I wasn’t solitary in my struggles—many of my classmates were facing similar challenges. The most valuable advice I can offer is to seek assistance. Whether from fellow students or instructors, reaching out for support can profoundly impact your comprehension of complex concepts.
### Valuing Engagement with Faculty
One of the most enriching elements of my first year was the encouragement from the teaching staff. The Materials Science department boasts dedicated lecturers who truly desire for their students to thrive. They acknowledge the hurdles we encounter and remain receptive to feedback.
Although I only fully leveraged pastoral support later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. Early on, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which helped me forge connections with faculty members. Familiarizing yourself with your lecturers and tutors can be incredibly advantageous, and I urge every student to take full advantage of the resources available.
### Concluding Thoughts
In hindsight, this year has shown me that many of my initial anxieties were unfounded. The backing from both staff and peers has been immeasurable, and I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone on this path. Most crucially, I’ve learned to balance academic pressures with the enjoyment of university life.
For anyone preparing to embark on their university journey, my message is straightforward: take the plunge, ask for aid, and seize every opportunity that presents itself.
