**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and trepidation about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and cautious, stepping into this new chapter felt daunting. Now, reflecting on this past year, I recognize it as a time brimming with personal development, challenges, and unforgettable memories. But what insights have I gained, and what’s my current perspective?
### Conquering the Fear of Building Friendships
A significant hurdle I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, you may share similar anxieties about connecting with others. On my inaugural day in student housing, I was so apprehensive that I remained in my room the entire day, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve established some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had.
I’ve created a second family at Imperial, and it all started with stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with others who were just as apprehensive. The essential takeaway? Make the move early. Even if you’re unsure, there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to meet people. Most importantly, be authentic—Imperial is home to a diverse community, and you’re likely to find individuals who align with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another considerable challenge was adjusting to the heightened workload and complexity of university-level material. The transition from A-levels was profound, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others study, but the truth is, everyone shares that struggle.
If you’re confused about a topic, it’s likely that others are too. The most beneficial action you can take is to seek assistance—whether it’s from your classmates or your professors. Learning to ask for help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Staff Support
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials Science and Engineering department are exceptional. They genuinely care about student success and are always receptive to feedback. They recognize the obstacles we encounter and maintain open lines of communication to address any issues.
I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until later in the year, which I now regret. At the beginning of the year, I embraced the opportunity to become a well-being representative for my cohort. This role enabled me to form connections with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and nurturing those connections can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Capitalize on the support offered—you can never have too much assistance.
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was largely unwarranted. An abundance of support systems exists, from faculty to fellow students, ready to assist you in facing the challenges ahead. Most importantly, I’ve learned that I’m never alone, and it’s possible to relish university life despite the stressors of assessments and deadlines.
If you’re preparing to embark on your own university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek assistance when necessary, and seize every opportunity that presents itself.
