**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and hesitation regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of embarking on my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being naturally shy and reserved, stepping into a completely unfamiliar environment felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles, and an abundance of unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
A significant challenge I encountered early on was the quest to forge friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a concern for you as well. I recall spending my initial day in student housing confined to my room, too apprehensive to venture out and present myself. However, sitting here today, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships of my life. Imperial has evolved into a second home for me, and it only required a little small talk with others who shared my situation.
The primary lesson I grasped? Take that leap of faith. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous ice-breaker gatherings and chances to connect with new individuals. Most importantly, stay true to yourself—Imperial is populated with a diverse range of students, and you are sure to encounter like-minded peers.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another substantial obstacle was adjusting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels was marked, and the transition from the first term to the second term was even more demanding. It’s easy to become daunted or doubt your skills, particularly when you observe others studying and appearing more assured.
What helped me through this period was the realization that everyone encounters difficulties at some stage. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, it’s likely that others are as well. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or your instructors. Developing the ability to ask for help is one of the most beneficial skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Significance of Support from Faculty
One of the most comforting elements of my experience has been the outstanding support from the Materials Science department. The staff sincerely desire for students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback. They grasp the hurdles we face and actively strive to assist us in navigating through them.
Though I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. One of the most positive choices I made was becoming a well-being representative for my year, which allowed me to connect with staff and gain a clearer understanding of the resources available. My recommendation? Make the most of the support systems provided—you can never receive too much help!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting upon this year, I have learned that many of the anxieties I harbored before commencing university were unfounded. An abundance of support exists, both from faculty and fellow students, to aid you in overcoming any challenges. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I am never alone and that it is feasible to reconcile academic demands with a fulfilling university experience.
If you are about to embark on your journey at Imperial, my counsel is straightforward: embrace the experience, seek help when needed, and don’t hesitate to take that initial step. You will be amazed at how much you develop along the way.
