**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt about the journey that awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an inherently shy and reserved person, embarking on this new phase felt daunting. Now that I reflect on the past year, I recognize a journey marked by personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standpoint?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the primary challenges I encountered early in my journey was the quest to make friends. If you’re contemplating this step, it’s likely one of your concerns as well. I recall my first day in the student residence—rather than venturing out to meet new acquaintances, I remained in my room all day, too apprehensive to introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships of my life. I’ve cultivated a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with basic small talk with fellow students who shared my situation.

So, what did I take away from this experience? Taking that first step is always worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous ice-breakers and social gatherings to facilitate connections with others. Above all, just be true to yourself—Imperial is teeming with diverse individuals, and you will surely find those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was acclimating to the workload and the heightened difficulty of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term felt particularly rigorous. It’s common to feel inundated and question your capabilities, especially when observing peers studying and assuming they have everything under control.

What empowered me to persevere was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re grappling with a concept, there’s a strong likelihood that others are as well. The most beneficial action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to ask for support is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate during your first year.

### The Significance of Staff Support

Speaking of support, the faculty within the Materials department are remarkable. They are genuinely committed to student success and empathize with our challenges. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, making sure our worries were acknowledged.

I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support offered until later in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. One of the most advantageous decisions I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to nurture relationships with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and engaging with them can greatly enrich your university experience. My foremost lesson? Utilize the support available—you can never have too much assistance.

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on the year, I’ve realized that many of the fears I harbored before starting university were unfounded. There are ample support systems available, ranging from staff to fellow students, to facilitate the transition. I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly isolated, and I’ve learned how to juggle academic demands while savoring university life.

For anyone about to begin their own journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and seize every opportunity that presents itself.
