**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and concerns regarding what the future held. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who has always been somewhat shy and introverted, entering this new phase felt intimidating. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, trials, and memorable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and how do I feel now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing

One of the most formidable challenges of starting university was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student, this might resonate with you as one of your primary worries. On my first day in student housing, just days prior to the term commencing, I spent the entire day confined in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Nevertheless, as I reflect today, I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life. Imperial has become a place I now call home, and it only required a few brief conversations with others who were feeling the same way.

So, what did I take away from this? Taking that first step is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease immediately, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaking events and chances to meet new people. Above all, stay true to yourself. With such a varied student population, you’re bound to come across individuals who align with your interests and values.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels to university life was considerable, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities amidst so many diligent students.

What helped me navigate this was the understanding that everyone experiences similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with a particular idea, chances are others are as well. The most effective approach is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Cultivating the ability to ask for help is one of the most valuable lessons you can learn during your first year.

### The Value of Staff Support

Speaking of support, the personnel in the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and are always ready to lend a hand. Throughout the academic year, they maintained open lines of communication, making sure our concerns were acknowledged.

It wasn’t until the end of the year that I fully leveraged the pastoral support available, and I wish I had utilized it sooner. One of the most beneficial decisions I made was to become a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to connect with staff members, which turned out to be incredibly valuable. There are numerous opportunities to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the available resources and support—you can never have too much assistance.

### Final Thoughts

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of the fears I had initially were unfounded. The apprehension I felt before starting university, as well as throughout the year, was alleviated by the remarkable support of both staff and fellow students. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned how to balance academic demands with moments of enjoyment.

If you’re about to embark on your university journey, my guidance is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when you need it, and fully embrace the experience. You’ll grow in unforeseen ways, and you might just discover a second family along the road.
