### Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about the journey ahead. I was just about to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been quiet and introverted, stepping into this new phase felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize a time brimming with personal development, new challenges, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current stance?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships

One of the most significant challenges I encountered initially was the quest to forge friendships. If you are a future student, this might be among your primary concerns as well. I remember my first day in student housing, staying tucked away in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself. However, as I write this today, I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships of my life—friends who truly feel like an extended family.

What insight did I gain from this experience? To begin with, making the effort to connect with new individuals at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. Don’t stress if you’re not ready; there are numerous icebreaker activities designed to help you meet others. Secondly, the best approach is to simply be yourself. With such a varied student community, you will undoubtedly encounter people who resonate with your interests and values.

#### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another substantial challenge was adjusting to the academic rigors and the heightened complexity of the coursework. The leap from A-levels to university was dramatic, and the transition between the first term and second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel swamped or doubt your capabilities when observing peers studying and grasping concepts seemingly with ease.

What assisted me in navigating this? Reminding myself that everyone faces similar struggles. If I was confused about a topic, there was a good chance others were too. The crucial lesson here is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to ask for help is one of the most essential abilities you can cultivate during your first year.

#### The Significance of Staff Engagement

One of the most comforting elements of my experience has been the remarkable support from the academic staff within the Materials department. They earnestly wish for students to succeed and are always receptive to feedback and discussion. Although I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner.

At the outset, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative, which enabled me to foster connections with staff members. This proved to be incredibly advantageous. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support on offer—you can never have too much assistance.

#### Concluding Thoughts

In retrospect, this year has illuminated the fact that many of the anxieties I held prior to beginning university were unfounded. There is a wealth of support available, both from faculty and fellow students. I’ve realized that I am never genuinely alone and that balancing academic challenges with a fulfilling university life is absolutely achievable.

If you are on the verge of commencing your adventure at Imperial, my counsel is straightforward: take that leap, seek help when necessary, and seize every chance to grow.
