**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and excitement as I prepared to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had previously been rather shy and introverted, entering this new phase felt intimidating. Reflecting back now, I acknowledge a year characterized by significant personal growth, obstacles, and unforgettable memories. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Connecting with Peers

One of the most daunting elements of commencing university was the task of forming new friendships. If you’re a prospective student, this may be one of your primary concerns as well. I vividly recall my first day settling into student housing—I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet new people. However, as I sit here today, I can assert that I have forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

The pivotal lesson I gleaned? Take that bold step. It may feel awkward at the outset, but numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others in the same boat await you. Above all, stay true to yourself. With the rich diversity of the student community, you will inevitably encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

The shift from A-level studies to university-level coursework proved to be another significant challenge. The increase in workload was substantial, and the complexity of the material experienced a noticeable escalation—particularly between the initial and subsequent terms. At times, I questioned whether I was managing, especially when I observed others engrossed in their studies.

What enabled me to persevere was the realization that I wasn’t alone in this struggle. If I grappled with a concept, it was highly likely others were too. My best piece of advice? Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. Whether consulting classmates or instructors, seeking help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate during your first year.

### The Value of Pursuing Support

One of the most comforting aspects of my program has been the exceptional support from the faculty. The staff in the Materials department genuinely wish for their students to thrive, and they actively engage with us to help tackle any difficulties we encounter.

Although I didn’t take full advantage of the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. Serving as a year well-being representative allowed me to foster connections with the staff, which turned out to be an invaluable opportunity. There are numerous avenues to establish relationships with faculty members, and doing so can greatly enhance your time at university. My foremost takeaway? Leverage the available support—you can never receive too much assistance.

### Concluding Thoughts

Looking back on my first year, I’ve realized that many of the anxieties I harbored prior to starting university were unfounded. There is always support around, whether from staff or fellow students. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that it is feasible to juggle academic demands while still enjoying the experience, even during stressful periods such as exams and deadlines.

For anyone about to commence their university adventure: embrace each moment, take risks, and remember that you’re never truly alone.
