**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who had always been introverted and quiet, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a period marked by personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and how do I feel now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most significant challenges I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might also be a major worry for you. I vividly recall my first day settling into my student accommodation—I was so daunted by the thought of introducing myself that I ended up spending the whole day in my room. However, looking at where I am now, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the most wonderful friendships of my life.
What is the crucial lesson I took away? Make that initial move. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be countless icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a rich diversity of students, you’re sure to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to the Academic Load
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university proved to be considerable, and the switch from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s completely natural to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying with ease.
What assisted me throughout this experience was the realization that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are as well. The most beneficial action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for help is one of the most essential skills you can foster in your first year.
### The Value of Engaging with Faculty
Regarding support, one of the greatest advantages of studying Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial is the outstanding faculty. They are genuinely committed to student success and are always receptive to feedback and communication. While I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support system until later in the academic year, I wish I had done so earlier.
Early on, I made the decision to become a year well-being representative. This experience allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be tremendously advantageous. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My main takeaway? Make the most of the available support—you can never have too much assistance!
### Final Thoughts
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of the doubts I harbored—both prior to and during university—were unfounded. A wealth of support exists, from both staff and fellow students, to help you overcome challenges. Most importantly, I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone, and that it is indeed feasible to juggle academic demands while enjoying the university experience.
If you are about to embark on your adventure at Imperial, my straightforward advice is this: take that jump, reach out for help when necessary, and seize the opportunities that present themselves. You will grow in ways you never anticipated.
