### Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Venturing beyond my comfort zone wasn’t something I was accustomed to, but reflecting back, I recognize a year marked by personal development, challenges, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the foremost obstacles I encountered at the university’s outset was forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a source of anxiety for you as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, I was so daunted by the prospect of socializing that I spent a whole day sequestered in my room. However, as I reflect today, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. Imperial has become like a second home, and it merely required me to venture out of my comfort zone and engage in casual conversations with those who shared similar feelings.
The crucial takeaway? Make the move early. If you feel unprepared, that’s completely fine—ample icebreaker events and opportunities to connect with others are available. Most importantly, be true to yourself. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with your values.
#### Adjusting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was acclimating to the academic workload and its intensity. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more daunting. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your skills when observing others’ rigorous study habits.
What assisted me during this process was recognizing that everyone experiences struggles at some juncture. If you find something confusing, there’s a good chance others do too. The optimal course of action is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or academic staff. Developing the ability to request support is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate during your first year.
#### Leveraging Faculty Support
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely care about students’ success and are always prepared to assist. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our concerns and offering guidance.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the student support services until later in the year, I wish I had accessed them sooner. One of the wisest decisions I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to establish connections with staff members, which turned out to be incredibly advantageous. There are numerous opportunities to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My paramount lesson? Fully embrace the support available—you can never have too much assistance.
#### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has illuminated that the anxiety I felt before commencing university was mostly unwarranted. Numerous support systems exist, from staff and fellow students alike, to help navigate the obstacles. Most importantly, I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone and that balancing academic challenges with enjoyment is entirely achievable.
As I look forward, I feel increasingly confident and eager about what lies ahead in the remainder of my university journey. To any incoming students: seize the experience, take risks, and always remember that support is readily available whenever you require it.
