**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and exhilaration as I geared up to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who previously was quite reserved, taking this plunge into a new chapter seemed intimidating. Now, reflecting on my first year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, challenges, and memorable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

A major hurdle I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re a future student, this could be a concern for you as well. I vividly recall my first day in student accommodation—I was so daunted by the thought of introducing myself that I stayed in my room all day. However, as weeks went by, I gradually ventured beyond my comfort zone, engaged in light conversations, and participated in social gatherings.

Now, I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships. I’ve found a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with simple dialogues with fellow students who were navigating similar experiences. My key lesson? Take that plunge at the start of the year. Even if you feel unprepared, countless icebreaker events await to help you connect with others. Most importantly, stay true to yourself—Imperial is home to a diverse group of individuals, and you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the rigorous coursework and the elevated complexity of university material. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term felt particularly intense. At times, I battled feelings of inadequacy, especially when I observed others studying and sensed that I was falling behind.

What enabled me to persevere was the understanding that I wasn’t isolated in my struggles—many of my classmates were facing identical difficulties. If something seems unclear, it’s likely others find it confusing too. The best course of action is to seek assistance, either from your peers or the academic staff. Learning to ask for help is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate during your first year.

### The Value of Faculty Support

Among the most comforting aspects of my journey has been the exceptional support from the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely wants students to thrive and remain receptive to feedback. They are aware of the hurdles we encounter and actively strive to support us throughout the year.

Although I didn’t fully engage with pastoral support until later, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. One of the smartest choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to interact with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My recommendation? Make the most of the available support—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on my journey, my first year at Imperial has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before starting university was natural yet often unnecessary. With the appropriate support from staff and fellow students, I discovered that I was never genuinely alone. More importantly, I learned how to balance academic challenges with personal enjoyment, fully embracing my university life.

For anyone about to start their own journey in higher education—embrace the trials, seek assistance when necessary, and don’t forget to savor the experience!
