**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts about what was coming. I was gearing up to start my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat introverted, immersing myself in an entirely new setting felt intimidating. Reflecting back now, I realize this year has been one of growth, challenges, and amazing experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Fear of Friendships

A significant challenge I encountered at the outset of university was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might be experiencing similar feelings of anxiety. I remember my first day moving into student housing—I spent the whole day inside my room, too scared to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say that I’ve made some of the closest friendships I’ve ever enjoyed. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began by pushing beyond my comfort zone and initiating small talks with others who were in a similar situation.

So, what did I come to realize? Firstly, taking that first courageous step is always rewarding. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to meet others. Secondly, the best approach is simply to be yourself. With such a diverse group of students, you are sure to find others who share your interests and values.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the heightened workload and complexity of university-level subjects. The transition from A-levels was very distinct, and the shift from the first to second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your own capabilities when surrounded by diligent peers.

Nonetheless, one of the crucial lessons I learned was that everyone faces similar struggles. If you are finding a particular concept difficult, others likely are too. The essential thing is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or lecturers. Requesting support is not a sign of weakness; in fact, it is a vital skill that can lead to your success.

### The Value of Staff Support

One of the most comforting aspects of my first year was the remarkable support from the Materials Science department. The staff are genuinely invested in students’ success and are aware of the challenges we confront. They foster open communication and pay close attention to student feedback.

Though I didn’t fully utilize pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Early in the year, I took the initiative by becoming a year well-being representative, which helped me engage with staff. This opportunity was invaluable, and I urge others to connect with their lecturers and support services. The resources available are meant to assist you—make sure to take advantage of them!

### Final Thoughts

Looking back, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt before starting university was mostly unfounded. There is a wealth of support available from both staff and peers. I’ve recognized that I’m never really alone, and I’ve learned how to balance academic pressures with enjoyment.

For anyone set to begin their university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take that leap, ask for assistance when necessary, and embrace the journey. You will grow in unexpected ways, and before long, you’ll find yourself reflecting on an amazing first year.
