**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been quiet and introverted, stepping into this new phase felt quite daunting. Now, reflecting back, I realize it has been a year rich with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained from this journey, and where am I now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most significant obstacles I encountered initially was the challenge of making friends. If you’re a future student, this might be among your greatest concerns as well. On my inaugural day at student housing, I was so daunted by the prospect of meeting new individuals that I ended up spending the whole day in my room. However, looking at my situation now, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships of my life.

The crucial lesson? Make that initial move. Even if you feel jittery or hesitant, there will be plenty of social events and opportunities to connect with fellow students. Most importantly, stay true to yourself—Imperial hosts a vibrant community, and you’re sure to find others who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was getting accustomed to the volume of work and the complexity of the course material. There was a clear transition from A-levels, with an even greater jump from the first to the second term. At times, I questioned my capabilities, particularly when I observed others studying and felt like I was falling behind.

What assisted me was the understanding that everyone else was experiencing similar struggles. If I found a concept difficult to grasp, it was likely that many others did as well. My greatest piece of advice? Be unafraid to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. Developing the ability to seek help is one of the most critical skills to cultivate in your first year.

### Assistance from Faculty and Well-being Programs

One of the aspects I came to value most was the exceptional support from the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely desire for students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback. They recognize the hurdles we encounter and actively strive to assist us.

Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had tapped into it earlier. In the beginning, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to forge strong relationships with staff members. Getting familiar with your lecturers and academic support team can be immensely beneficial, and I strongly encourage you to utilize the resources available to you.

### Essential Insights from My First Year

Looking back on this past year, I’ve discovered that many of the anxieties I had prior to commencing university were unfounded. A plethora of support exists, both from faculty and fellow students, to assist in navigating challenges. Above all, I’ve realized that I am never truly isolated, and that enjoying university life amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines is indeed attainable.

For anyone poised to embark on their journey at Imperial, my message is straightforward: take that first leap, embrace the obstacles, and fully utilize the support surrounding you. University is a period of growth, and while it may seem intimidating at first, it is also an immensely rewarding adventure.
