**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and quiet, embarking on this new adventure felt daunting. Reflecting on this past year, I can see it was filled with personal development, obstacles, and many unforgettable experiences. But what have I discovered, and where am I today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the major obstacles I encountered at the beginning was the struggle to make friends. If you’re considering this path, this may be one of your biggest worries as well. I remember the first day I moved into my student accommodation—I was so frightened by the thought of introducing myself that I spent the whole day in my room, steering clear of social interaction.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all thanks to some initial small talk. What I’ve come to understand is that making that first move—no matter how intimidating—is invariably worthwhile. If you’re feeling apprehensive, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied student body, you’re sure to meet people who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of university-level material. The leap from A-levels to university proved considerable, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more challenging. It’s all too easy to feel swamped and question your capabilities, particularly when you observe others studying rigorously.

What aided me through this tough period was realizing that everyone faces similar challenges. If you’re grappling with a topic, it’s likely others are as well. The most beneficial action you can take is to seek assistance—whether it be from fellow students or instructors. Learning to ask for support is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate during your first year.

### Maximizing Support Resources

One aspect that truly impressed me about the Materials Science department was the outstanding support provided by the staff. They genuinely care about student success and are always willing to listen and communicate. Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier.

At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This position allowed me to foster relationships with staff members, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are countless ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the support provided to you—there’s no such thing as too much help!

### Concluding Thoughts

As I reflect on the year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university was quite unwarranted. There exists a plethora of support systems, both from faculty and fellow students, ensuring no one ever has to feel isolated. I’ve figured out how to manage academic demands while also enjoying university life, and I’ve evolved in ways I never anticipated.

For anyone on the brink of beginning their university adventure: embrace the obstacles, take the plunge, and seize every opportunity. You won’t look back with regret!
