**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and a touch of fear regarding the future. I was on the brink of beginning my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer, and diving into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was accustomed to. Reflecting back on this past year, I recognize it has been a journey of personal development, obstacles, and a good deal of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing

One of the most intimidating elements of starting university was forging new friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you might relate. On my initial day moving into student housing—mere days prior to the official start of the term—I spent an entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversation with those who were experiencing the same feelings as I was.

So, what’s the lesson here? That first step is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease immediately, don’t stress—there will be an abundance of icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just be authentic. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from first to second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your capability, especially when you observe others studying and seeming more assured.

What aided me was the realization that everyone else is experiencing similar struggles. If something confounds you, it’s likely others are having difficulties as well. The most important thing you can do is seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty members. This is perhaps the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Pursuing Support

Speaking of faculty, the teaching staff in the Materials department is exceptional. They genuinely care about our success and comprehend the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us and offered support whenever it was needed.

I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available to me until the year’s end, and I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. At the start of the year, I took a chance by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to develop connections with faculty members. This turned out to be incredibly beneficial, and I strongly suggest getting acquainted with your lecturers and support staff. There are numerous ways to accomplish this, and it can significantly enhance your university experience. My greatest takeaway? Never hesitate to utilize the support that exists—you can never get too much help!

### Concluding Thoughts

In hindsight, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before starting university—and even during my time here—was often unwarranted. There are abundant support systems available, from staff to fellow students, which means no one has to tackle challenges independently. Most importantly, I’ve discovered how to balance academic demands while also enjoying my time at university.

If you’re on the verge of commencing your own journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take that chance, seek help when necessary, and seize every opportunity that arises. You won’t regret it!
