**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been quiet and introverted, entering this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on the year now, I recognize it has been a time of personal development, obstacles, and memorable moments. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered was forming new friendships. If you are a potential student, this might rank as one of your primary worries as well. I recall my very first day moving into student housing—I spent the whole day in my room, too nervous to venture out and introduce myself. However, as I sit here now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual chats with others who were just as anxious as I was.
So, what have I learned? Taking that initial step is always a valuable endeavor. If you feel unprepared at first, don’t fret—there will be plenty of social events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, remain authentic. Given the diverse student community, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and ideals.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more demanding. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others studying with confidence.
What assisted me during this period was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely others are facing the same issue. The most beneficial action you can take is to seek help—be it from classmates or professors. Learning to seek assistance is one of the most essential skills to cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Assistance from Faculty
On the topic of support, the faculty within the Materials Science department have been exceptional. They sincerely want their students to thrive and are always ready to assist. Throughout the year, they had open lines of communication with us, addressing any issues we raised.
I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. Early in the term, I took a chance and became a well-being representative for my year, which enabled me to forge strong connections with staff members. Getting acquainted with your professors and support teams can be immensely advantageous, and I strongly encourage you to leverage the resources at your disposal.
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has imparted to me that many of the fears I harbored prior to beginning university were unwarranted. There is an abundance of support available—from both the staff and fellow students—ensuring no one has to tackle difficulties in isolation. I’ve also figured out how to juggle academic demands while enjoying university life.
To anyone gearing up to embark on their university journey: cherish the experience, take risks, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You’ll evolve in ways you never anticipated, and before long, you’ll find yourself reflecting fondly on an amazing first year.
