**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself filled with apprehension, doubt, and anticipation as I geared up to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Venturing into the unknown felt overwhelming, especially for someone who had typically been quite reserved. Reflecting on my inaugural year now, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most significant challenges I encountered at the beginning of university was the task of making friends. If you’re a prospective student, this may also weigh heavily on your mind. I recall my first day in student housing—I was so daunted by the thought of introducing myself that I chose to stay in my room all day. However, as the weeks passed, I slowly ventured outside my comfort zone, striking up conversations with others navigating the same experience.

Today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. The university has transformed into a second home, and the friends I’ve made feel like family. The essential lesson I’ve learned? Don’t hesitate to dive in early. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most critically, be authentic—Imperial boasts a rich tapestry of personalities, and you’re sure to connect with those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the subjects. The shift from A-levels to university was profound, and the leap from the first term to the second was even more severe. There were moments of self-doubt, particularly when I noticed others studying hard and felt as though I was lagging.

What assisted me during this time was acknowledging that everyone was navigating similar struggles. If I found a concept challenging, the likelihood was that others were too. My best piece of advice? Don’t shy away from seeking assistance. Whether from fellow students or faculty, asking for support is one of the most beneficial skills you can cultivate during your first year.

### The Value of Connecting with Faculty

On the topic of support, I must highlight the exceptional nature of the Materials Science and Engineering faculty. They genuinely prioritize students’ well-being and academic achievements, frequently reaching out to address any concerns. Although I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support offered until late in the year, I regret not utilizing it sooner.

One of the most advantageous choices I made was to become a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to forge strong relationships with faculty members, which turned out to be incredibly advantageous. There are countless ways to engage with academic staff, and such interactions can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the resources and support available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In hindsight, my first year at Imperial has shown me that many of the fears I harbored—both before and throughout my time at university—were unfounded. With the right encouragement from faculty and peers, I learned that I was never isolated. More importantly, I uncovered how to juggle academic demands with enjoyment, fully engaging in my university life.

To those about to start their own university adventure, my counsel is straightforward: face the challenges head-on, seek assistance when necessary, and allow yourself to evolve. The journey will be as fulfilling as you choose to make it!
