### Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being naturally shy and introverted, diving into this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year full of development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained from this experience, and where do I find myself now?

#### Conquering the Fear of Making Connections

One of the primary hurdles I encountered at the onset of university was forming friendships. If you are an incoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, I was so daunted by the thought of introducing myself that I spent the whole day in my room. However, fast-forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever known.

The main takeaway? Take that initial leap. Even if anxiety creeps in, there will be numerous ice-breakers and social gatherings designed to foster connections. Most importantly, just be authentic—Imperial boasts a varied community, and you’re sure to meet others who resonate with your interests and values.

#### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic requirements and the heightened complexity of the content. The shift from A-levels to university was profound, and the transition from the first to the second term proved even more trying. At times, I questioned my capabilities, especially when I observed others engrossed in their studies.

What supported me through this period was the realization that I wasn’t alone—many of my colleagues faced the same difficulties. The best suggestion I can offer is to reach out for help. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty, seeking assistance is vital. Everyone shares similar experiences, and teamwork makes the journey far more manageable.

#### The Value of Reaching Out for Assistance

One of the most impactful elements of my first year was the remarkable support from the Materials Science department. The staff are genuinely invested in students’ well-being and academic success. They comprehend the challenges we encounter and foster open lines of communication to address any issues.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. Serving as a year well-being representative enabled me to interact with staff, which turned out to be an invaluable opportunity. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and taking these paths can significantly enhance your university experience. My most important lesson? Utilize the support available—you can never have too much assistance.

#### Concluding Thoughts

In hindsight, this year has revealed to me that many of the apprehensions I harbored before embarking on university were unwarranted. With the right support from staff and fellow students, I was able to overcome challenges and evolve both academically and personally. Most crucially, I discovered that I was never truly alone, and I found ways to harmonize the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and connection.

If you are about to embark on your university journey, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and embrace the adventure. You will be amazed at the growth you experience along the way.
