**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been quite reserved, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. However, in retrospect, I now recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and amazing experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most significant challenges I encountered at the outset was forming friendships. If you are a potential student, this concern might resonate with you as well. On my first day at the student accommodation, I was so overwhelmed that I remained in my room all day, too anxious to introduce myself to anyone.
Fast forward to today, I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve encountered at Imperial have become a second family to me. What made this possible? Simply initiating conversations with others who shared my sentiments.
The essential takeaway here is to take that initial leap. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be a plethora of icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Most crucially, just be authentic—Imperial is teeming with diverse personalities, and you’re sure to find others who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened difficulty of university-level material. The transition from A-levels was markedly pronounced, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more intense. It’s easy to feel daunted or question your capabilities when observing others studying with assurance.
What helped me persevere was realizing that we are all navigating similar challenges. If you find something unclear, it’s likely that others are grappling with it as well. The most productive step you can take is to solicit help—be it from peers or the faculty. Seeking assistance is not a sign of inadequacy; it’s a crucial skill that will benefit you throughout your university journey.
### The Value of Faculty Support
One of the most beneficial elements of my experience has been the exceptional support from the Materials Science department. The staff truly desire for students to thrive and are consistently receptive to feedback. They recognize the difficulties we experience and actively strive to assist us.
Although I didn’t fully embrace pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had capitalized on it sooner. One of my best decisions was becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which turned out to be immensely rewarding. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can profoundly enrich your university experience. My foremost takeaway? Make the most of the support at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the apprehensions and worries I faced prior to starting university were largely misplaced. There are extensive support systems available, both from faculty and fellow students, to guide you through the challenges. I’ve also understood that I’m never truly alone and that enjoying university life amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines is entirely feasible.
If you are about to embark on your journey at Imperial, my guidance is straightforward: take that leap, seek help when necessary, and fully embrace the experience. You’ll evolve in ways you never anticipated, and you’ll reminisce about your first year with a sense of pride.
