**Reflections on My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts regarding what awaited me. Having always been somewhat introverted, plunging into this new chapter was daunting. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a time brimming with personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One significant obstacle I encountered in the beginning was forging friendships. If you’re a prospective student, this may also be a concern for you. I recall my initial day in student housing—I was so daunted that I spent the whole day isolated in my room, too anxious to approach anyone. However, as I write this today, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known.

The essential lesson I discovered? Initiate that first move. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be ample opportunities for icebreaker events and chances to meet others in similar situations. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a varied student community, you are sure to connect with individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another major challenge was adjusting to the intensity and complexity of university-level coursework. The leap from A-levels was considerable, and the transition from the first to the second term proved even more difficult. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, especially when observing others studying fervently.

What assisted me through this phase was recognizing that I was not alone. If I struggled with a concept, it was likely that many others were too. The most crucial takeaway for me was to seek assistance—whether it be from classmates or faculty. Asking for help is not indicative of weakness; it’s one of the most vital skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### Encouragement from Faculty and Support Services

One of the most comforting aspects of my journey has been the remarkable support from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely wish for students to flourish and are always receptive to conversations regarding any academic or personal obstacles we encounter.

Although I didn’t fully engage with pastoral support until later in the academic year, I wish I had sought it out earlier. One of my best choices was to become a year wellbeing representative. This position allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be tremendously advantageous. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university life. My primary takeaway? Leverage the available support—you can never have too much assistance.

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this past year, I have learned that many of the apprehensions I harbored before university were unfounded. With the appropriate guidance from staff and fellow students, I managed to overcome challenges and genuinely relish my experience. I’ve realized that I am never alone, and I’ve learned how to balance academic demands with personal fulfillment.

For anyone about to begin their university adventure: welcome the unpredictability, take that initial leap, and seize the opportunities that come your way. It’s a transformative journey, and you will emerge more resilient on the other side.
