**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what was in store for me. I was on the verge of commencing my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Transitioning from a previously shy nature to this new journey appeared daunting. Reflecting now, I can see a year rich with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating facets of entering university was the prospect of making new friends. If you’re an incoming student, this could be one of your primary worries as well. On my initial day in university housing, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Yet, sitting here now, I can assertively share that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known—friends who feel like family.
What did I come to realize? Taking that initial leap of faith at the year’s outset is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared, don’t fret—there will be an abundance of ice-breaker activities and chances to socialize. Above all, be authentic. In such a vibrant student community, you’re sure to connect with individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the demanding coursework and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second semester felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become disheartened, particularly when observing others study and beginning to question your own proficiency.
What aided me in overcoming this? Reminding myself that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you’re having trouble grasping a concept, it’s highly likely that others are, too. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Cultivating the ability to ask for help is one of the most advantageous skills you can acquire during your first year.
### The Value of Engaging with Faculty
One of the most comforting elements of my program has been the exceptional support provided by the teaching staff. They genuinely aim for students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they upheld open communication with us, addressing our questions and providing insights.
I didn’t fully leverage the available pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, yet I wish I had done it earlier. One of the wisest choices I made was to serve as a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to cultivate relationships with faculty members, which turned out to be tremendously advantageous. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and engaging with them can greatly enrich your university experience. My key lesson? Make the most of the support offered—you can never receive too much assistance.
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on my first year, I have come to understand that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to and during university—was often unwarranted. Numerous support structures are available, from faculty to peers, ensuring that no one has to feel isolated. Most importantly, I’ve learned to balance academic demands while also savoring the university experience.
For those about to embark on your own university adventure, my guidance is straightforward: take the plunge, request help whenever you need it, and seize every opportunity that presents itself.
