**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I faced anxiety, uncertainty, and doubt as I geared up to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being inherently shy and reserved, this new path felt quite daunting. However, as I reflect on the past year, I recognize it has been a period rich in personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. So what insights have I gained, and what is my current outlook?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the greatest challenges I encountered was forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might similarly rank among your top concerns. On my inaugural day in the student residence, I was so overwhelmed that I remained locked in my room the whole day, too apprehensive to introduce myself to others. Nonetheless, as time went on, I began building strong bonds with individuals who have now become like a second family to me.
The essential takeaway? Embrace the challenge early. Even if you feel unprepared, numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet others are available. Most crucially, stay true to yourself—Imperial brims with diverse personalities, and you are sure to find kindred spirits.
### Adapting to Academic Rigors
The shift from A-levels to university coursework presented another major challenge. The workload intensified, and the complexity surged, particularly between the first and second terms. At times, I questioned my competencies, especially upon witnessing others study fervently. Soon, I came to understand that everyone was navigating similar struggles. If I found a concept tough, others likely did, too.
The most significant lesson I learned was to seek assistance. Whether from classmates or educators, reaching out for help made a substantial impact. Cultivating the habit of asking for support early on is among the most vital skills you can acquire in your first year.
### The Value of Connecting with Faculty
One of the highlights of my first year was building connections with the faculty. The professors and support staff in the Materials department are genuinely invested in students’ achievements and well-being. They empathize with our struggles and actively engage with us to tackle any issues.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available to me until later in the year, I wish I had accessed it sooner. Serving as a year well-being representative enabled me to establish ties with faculty members, which was incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My biggest takeaway? Tap into the support system—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Reflections
In looking back at my first year, I’ve come to realize that many of the apprehensions I held before commencing university were unfounded. The backing from both faculty and peers assisted me in overcoming challenges, and I learned that I was never truly solitary. Most importantly, I figured out how to manage academic stress while enjoying my experiences, maximizing my time at Imperial.
For anyone on the verge of beginning their university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, reach out for help, and seize every opportunity. You will grow in unforeseen ways, and before long, you’ll find yourself reminiscing about a truly unforgettable year.
