**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts regarding what was coming next. I was on the verge of embarking on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer, and stepping into the unfamiliar was intimidating for someone like me, who had always been quiet and introverted. Reflecting now, I recognize a year abundant in personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most significant challenges I encountered at the outset was forging friendships. If you are a potential student, this might be a primary concern for you as well. On my initial day in student housing, right before the semester began, I spent an entire day sequestered in my room, too shy to venture out and present myself.

Fast forward to today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with others who were equally apprehensive.

So, what was the lesson learned? The most valuable action you can take is to make that first move. If you’re not fully prepared, don’t fret—there will be ample ice-breaker activities and chances to connect with others. Above all, simply be yourself. With such a diverse student community, you will surely encounter people who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another considerable challenge was adjusting to the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first to second term proved even more challenging. It’s quite common to feel inundated and question your capabilities, particularly when observing others study and assuming they have everything in order.

What aided me during this time was the realization that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, chances are that others are, too. The essential thing is to seek assistance—whether from colleagues or from instructors. Developing the skill to seek help is one of the most crucial competencies you can nurture in your first year.

### The Value of Staff Support

In relation to support, the faculty in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely desire for students to thrive and comprehend the challenges we encounter. They foster open lines of communication with us throughout the year and are always eager to assist.

I didn’t fully capitalize on the available pastoral support until the year’s end, and I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. One of the best decisions I made was to become a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to cultivate connections with staff members, which turned out to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My most important takeaway? Utilize the available support—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Closing Thoughts

In hindsight, my first year has illuminated the fact that the apprehension I felt before and during university was frequently unwarranted. There are so many support systems in place, from faculty to peers, that no one ever needs to feel isolated. Most importantly, I’ve learned how to manage academic demands while also savoring my university experience.

If you’re on the brink of commencing your journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and embrace every opportunity that arises.
