**Thoughts on My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with nerves, uncertainty, and anxiety about what was to come. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a naturally shy and reserved person, diving into this new phase felt quite daunting. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year marked by personal development, obstacles, and amazing experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most intimidating parts of commencing university was the challenge of forming new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might rank among your greatest worries as well. On my initial day in the student dorms, I felt so overwhelmed that I secluded myself in my room for the entire day, too anxious to introduce myself to anyone.

Fast forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. I’ve found a second family here at Imperial, and it all started with stepping outside of my comfort zone and striking up casual conversations with others in similar situations.

The critical takeaway? Take the plunge early on. If you’re feeling uncertain, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Above all, just be yourself. With such a varied student body, you’re sure to encounter individuals who share your interests.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels to university was substantial, and the leap from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. At times, witnessing others study effectively led me to question my own capabilities.

What propelled me forward was the realization that everyone was navigating similar struggles. If I found something difficult to grasp, it was likely that others were facing the same issue. The best piece of advice I can offer? Reach out for assistance. This is one of the most vital skills to cultivate in your first year—whether it’s connecting with classmates or seeking advice from instructors.

### The Value of Seeking Guidance

This leads me to another important point—the amazing support provided by the Materials Science department. The staff truly want students to thrive and are consistently open to input. They comprehend the hurdles we encounter and proactively engage with us throughout the academic year.

Though I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had tapped into that resource sooner. One of the best decisions I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous options for interacting with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My main takeaway? Make the most of the support available—you can never have an excess of assistance.

### Concluding Thoughts

In summary, my first year has shown me that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university was largely unfounded. There are numerous support systems available, both from faculty and fellow students, to facilitate the transition. I’ve realized that I’m never truly on my own, and I’ve learned how to juggle academic challenges with the enjoyment of university life.

For anyone about to embark on their journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: embrace the challenges, seek help when necessary, and seize every opportunity. University is a period for development, and while it may initially seem overwhelming, it will undoubtedly become one of the most fulfilling experiences of your life.
