**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year of [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and reserved, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. Rewinding to this moment, I recognize a year enriched with personal development, challenges, and a host of unforgettable memories. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships

One of the most significant obstacles I faced initially was the challenge of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, you might share this concern. I recall my first day settling into my accommodation—I was so daunted that I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to introduce myself to anyone.

Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most cherished friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with others who were also looking for connections.

The greatest lesson I’ve learned? Take the plunge early. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be ample icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people. Above all, be authentic—Imperial boasts a rich tapestry of diverse individuals, and you’re sure to find friends who resonate with you.

### Adapting to Academic Challenges

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the demanding workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the transition from the first to the second term proved even more strenuous. It’s natural to feel inundated or question your competence when witnessing peers studying fervently.

What assisted me during this transition was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find a concept difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are facing those challenges too. The essential approach is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Developing the ability to ask for help is one of the most essential skills you can hone in your first year.

### The Significance of Staff Support

One aspect I came to truly value was the outstanding support offered by the Materials Science department. The faculty earnestly wish for students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback. They recognize the hurdles we encounter and are proactive in tackling our issues.

Even though I didn’t leverage pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. At the year’s onset, I took a bold step and became a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are countless avenues to engage with faculty, and pursuing these connections can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Closing Thoughts

Reflecting back, this year has revealed that many of the anxieties I held before entering university were unfounded. There exist a multitude of support systems, from faculty to fellow students, ensuring no one has to navigate this journey alone. I’ve discovered how to balance stress with enjoyment and have grown in ways I never anticipated.

For anyone about to embark on their university adventure, my straightforward advice is: embrace the experience, seek assistance whenever necessary, and don’t hesitate to take that initial step. You’ll be amazed at how much you evolve along the journey.
