**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been timid and introverted, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. In hindsight, I recognize a year abundant with personal development, challenges, and remarkable experiences. So, what have I discovered, and where am I now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the greatest obstacles I encountered was building friendships. If you’re a prospective student, this may be one of your primary worries as well. I recall my first day in student housing—I was so daunted that I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to introduce myself to anyone.

Now, looking at my current situation, I can proudly say that I have formed some of the best friendships of my life. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and all it necessitated was stepping outside of my comfort zone and initiating small talks with fellow students in similar situations.

So, what was my takeaway? Taking that first bold step is always rewarding. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just be yourself—Imperial is filled with a variety of people, and you’re likely to discover others who share your passions and principles.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic demands and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was quite notable, and the jump from the first to the second term was even more substantial. At times, it was tempting to feel overwhelmed and question my capabilities, particularly when observing others studying intensely.

What assisted me during this period was understanding that everyone was navigating similar challenges. If I struggled with a concept, it was likely that others were grappling with it too. The most beneficial approach I took was to ask for assistance—whether it was from peers or professors. This is one of the crucial skills to cultivate in your first year: don’t hesitate to seek help when necessary.

### The Significance of Interacting with Staff

One of the highlights of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the remarkable support provided by the staff. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback and dialogue.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Initially, I made the effort to become a well-being representative for my year, which enabled me to forge connections with faculty members. Familiarizing yourself with your professors and academic staff can be tremendously beneficial, and there are countless ways to achieve this. My most important insight? Utilize the support that is at your disposal—there’s never too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on the year, I’ve realized that much of the anxiety I experienced prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unwarranted. There are abundant support systems in place, from staff to fellow students, ensuring that no one ever has to feel isolated. Most significantly, I’ve learned how to manage academic responsibilities while also enjoying university life.

For anyone preparing to embark on their journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take that initial step, request help when necessary, and fully engage in the experience. You will develop more than you ever anticipated.
