**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
A decade ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, doubt, and worry about what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my first year as a student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Venturing outside my comfort zone wasn’t something I was accustomed to, but reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey filled with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my standing today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the prospect of forming new friendships. If you are an incoming student, this may be one of your top worries as well. On the very first day in my student housing, I found myself spending hours in my room, too anxious to go out and greet others. However, as I write this now, I can assertively declare that I have formed some of the best friendships I could have hoped for. Imperial has turned into a second home, and all it required was a bit of small talk with fellow students who were in the same boat.
What did I discover? Taking that initial step is more than worthwhile. Even if you don’t feel fully prepared, there will be numerous opportunities to engage with others and ice-breaker events. Above all, just be genuine—Imperial is home to an array of diverse individuals, and you’re sure to find people who resonate with your interests.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the heightened workload and academic rigor. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term proved even more demanding. At times, it felt overwhelming, particularly when I began comparing myself to classmates who seemed to grasp concepts with ease.
What got me through? Acknowledging that I wasn’t in this alone. If I struggled with a subject, it was likely that others did as well. The most important lesson I learned in my first year was the value of asking for assistance—whether from peers or professors. Seeking help is not an indication of weakness; rather, it is an essential step toward achieving success.
### The Value of Staff Support
One of the most rewarding elements of my experience has been the outstanding support from the Materials Science department. The instructors truly care about the success of their students and are always receptive to feedback. Although I didn’t take full advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had embraced it earlier on.
Right from the beginning, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative, which enabled me to establish connections with staff members. This experience illuminated how advantageous it is to interact with faculty, whether through academic discourse or seeking advice. My key takeaway? Utilize the available support—there’s no such thing as excessive assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that a lot of my initial anxieties were unfounded. The hurdles I encountered—social or academic—were manageable with the appropriate support and outlook. I’ve learned that I am never truly alone, and I’ve explored the balance between enjoyment and the demands of exams and deadlines.
For anyone preparing to start their university journey, my message is straightforward: embrace the experience, seek assistance when needed, and remember that growth comes from stepping beyond your comfort zone.
