**Contemplations on My Initial Year Pursuing Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in nerves, uncertainty, and apprehension about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had consistently been shy and introverted, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
### Conquering the Trepidation of Forming Friendships
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered was forging new friendships. If you are an incoming student, this might be a major concern for you as well. On my debut day in student housing, I was so overwhelmed that I spent the entire day confined to my room, too apprehensive to introduce myself to others. However, fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. Imperial has truly become a second home, and it all began with stepping outside of my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with others who were in the same position as me.
What did I take away from this? Taking that initial step right from the start is invariably beneficial. If you don’t feel quite ready, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to socialize. Above all, I learned the importance of being authentic. With such a varied student community, you’re certain to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Challenges
Another considerable challenge was acclimatizing to the workload and the heightened difficulty of the material. The shift from A-levels to university was palpable, and the leap from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel daunted or to question your capabilities when you observe others studying with confidence. Nevertheless, I reminded myself that everyone was navigating similar experiences. If I found something challenging to grasp, it’s likely that many others were as well.
The most important lesson I gleaned was to seek assistance. Whether from peers or instructors, asking for help is essential. Don’t hesitate to reach out—there is always someone ready to lend a hand.
### The Value of Engaging with Faculty
One of the most commendable aspects of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the supportive faculty. They are genuinely invested in students’ success and remain receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they kept in touch with us regularly, ensuring we had the necessary support.
Though I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral assistance until later in the year, I wish I had started earlier. In the beginning, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative, which helped me develop connections with faculty members. This turned out to be extremely beneficial. There are various ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that many of my early concerns were unfounded. The backing from both staff and fellow students was invaluable, and I learned that I was never genuinely alone in my challenges. Most importantly, I discovered how to juggle academic demands while savoring student life.
For those about to embark on their journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take that initial leap, seek help when needed, and fully embrace the experience. You’ll evolve in ways you couldn’t have imagined, and before long, you’ll look back on your first year with a sense of pride.
