**Thoughts on My Inaugural Year at University**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, uncertainty, and enthusiasm as I geared up to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who tends to be introverted, stepping into this new phase felt daunting. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences. But what have I discovered, and where do I find myself now?

### Confronting the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was forming new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, I remained in my room for hours, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. However, fast forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve cultivated some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

The essential takeaway? Take the plunge early. Even if you don’t feel entirely prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, stay true to yourself—Imperial is a melting pot of unique individuals, and you are sure to encounter people who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

The shift from A-levels to university coursework was a considerable leap, and the intensity of the workload escalated in the second term. At times, I questioned my capabilities, particularly when observing others studying confidently. Yet, I soon came to understand that everyone was experiencing similar challenges. If I had difficulty with a topic, the likelihood was that others did as well.

What’s the best advice I can offer? Don’t hesitate to request assistance. Whether from peers or lecturers, seeking help is one of the most essential skills you can acquire in your first year.

### The Significance of Requesting Support

One of the most comforting aspects of my program has been the outstanding support from the teaching staff. They sincerely desire for students to thrive and are always ready to respond to our inquiries. Although I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier.

Early on, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative, which enabled me to foster connections with staff members. Developing relationships with your professors and support personnel can be immensely advantageous, and I strongly recommend utilizing the resources at your disposal. There’s no such thing as too much support!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that many of my initial apprehensions were unfounded. The assistance from both staff and fellow students facilitated my navigation through the complexities of university life. I’ve come to realize that I’m never genuinely alone and that it’s feasible to juggle academic challenges with enjoyment and personal development.

For anyone about to embark on their university adventure—embrace the journey, seek assistance when necessary, and above all, relish the experience!
