### Thoughts on My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and anticipation as I got ready to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, beginning this new chapter felt intimidating. Reflecting back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the primary challenges I encountered right at the start was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, I felt so overwhelmed that I spent the entire day inside my room, too apprehensive to introduce myself to others. However, as weeks passed, I gradually ventured out of my comfort zone, engaging in light conversation and participating in social gatherings.

Now, I can proudly affirm that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. The individuals I’ve encountered have become like a second family to me, and all it required was a bit of bravery to start a dialogue. My most important lesson? Take that initial step. If you don’t feel prepared, don’t stress—there will be numerous icebreaker events designed to help you connect with others. Above all, just be yourself. With such a varied student community, you’re certain to discover people who resonate with your interests and values.

#### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another major obstacle was learning to cope with the workload and the heightened complexity of university-level material. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more demanding. There were moments when I questioned my capabilities, particularly when I noticed others studying decisively while I struggled to understand certain topics.

What aided me in overcoming this was realizing that I wasn’t the only one—many of my classmates were grappling with similar issues. If you don’t grasp something, it’s likely that others don’t as well. The best course of action is to seek assistance, whether from fellow students or instructors. Cultivating the ability to ask for support is one of the most valuable skills you can nurture during your first year.

#### Significance of Staff Support

One of the most comforting elements of my experience has been the remarkable support from the Materials Science department. The faculty sincerely care about students’ welfare and academic progress. They recognize the challenges we encounter and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year to address any issues.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had reached out sooner. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative enabled me to connect with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely helpful. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My suggestion? Make the most of the support offered to you—you can never have too much assistance!

#### Concluding Thoughts

In hindsight, this year has shown me that many of the apprehensions I held before starting university were unwarranted. There are boundless support systems available, from staff to fellow students, to help you maneuver through any hurdles. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone, and that it is indeed feasible to juggle academic demands while enjoying a rich and rewarding university experience.

If you’re about to begin your adventure at Imperial, embrace the upcoming opportunities, take that first step, and remember—support is always within reach when you need it.
