### Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts about what the future would hold. I was set to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, entering this new setting felt daunting. Reflecting on that time now, I recognize a year rich with personal development, obstacles, and amazing experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
A significant source of anxiety when beginning university was the challenge of forming new friendships. If you’re a prospective student, this concern may resonate with you as well. On my very first day in residence, I was so anxious that I remained in my room all day, too hesitant to reach out to anyone. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced.
Imperial has turned into a home away from home, and all it required was pushing myself out of my comfort zone to engage in light conversations with peers who were feeling just as uncertain. My most important lesson? Take that initial step early. Even if you don’t feel prepared, don’t despair—there will be countless social events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a diverse student community, you will undoubtedly encounter individuals who share your interests.
#### Navigating Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and greater complexity of the coursework. The transition from A-levels to university was profound, and moving from the first term to the second was even tougher. It’s easy to feel swamped and question your capabilities, particularly when you observe others studying intensely.
What motivated me to persevere was realizing that everyone faces hurdles at some point. If you find a topic confusing, chances are others are struggling too. The essential thing is to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to seek help is one of the most crucial skills you can acquire during your first year.
#### Assistance from Faculty and Wellness Support
One of the standout features of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the unwavering support from the faculty. They are genuinely invested in students’ success and receptive to feedback. They comprehend the challenges we deal with and consistently maintain communication to tackle any issues that arise.
While I didn’t fully utilize pastoral support until later in the academic year, I wish I had embraced it earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my group. This position allowed me to forge connections with faculty, which was invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and taking the initiative to do so can significantly enrich your university experience. My suggestion? Take advantage of the support available—you can never get too much assistance!
#### Concluding Reflections
Looking back, this past year has shown me that the anxieties and uncertainties I harbored before entering university were unfounded. Numerous support systems are available, both from staff and fellow students, to help you navigate through challenges. Most crucially, I’ve come to realize that I am never alone and that it’s entirely possible to enjoy university life, even amidst the stresses of examinations and deadlines.
If you are about to embark on your journey at Imperial, embrace the adventure, take risks, and always remember—you’ve got this!
