**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and skepticism about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer, and diving into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previous shy self felt at ease with. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, challenges, and numerous delightful experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
A significant obstacle I encountered at the university’s outset was forging friendships. If you’re a future student perusing this, you might share that same trepidation. On my first day within student housing, I remained in my room all day, feeling too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Yet, here I am today, proudly stating that I’ve built some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known. Imperial has truly become a second home, and it all started with a bit of small talk with others in similar situations.
What did I take away from this? Taking that first step is invariably rewarding. If you’re feeling unprepared, fret not—there will be ample icebreaker events and avenues to meet newcomers. Most crucially, simply be yourself. With such a diverse student community, you’re sure to find peers who share your interests.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic expectations and the heightened complexity of university-level material. The leap from A-levels was considerable, and the transition from the first to the second term proved even tougher. It’s natural to feel inundated or question your capabilities, particularly when you see others immersed in their studies.
What benefited me was the reminder that everyone is navigating the same waters. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, it’s likely that others are grappling with it as well. The most effective step you can take is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Cultivating the habit of asking for support early on is one of the most crucial abilities you can acquire in your first year.
### Assistance from Faculty and Well-being Services
On the note of support, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely wish for students to thrive and grasp the hurdles we face. Throughout the year, they fostered open lines of communication, ensuring we had access to necessary resources.
I didn’t fully take advantage of well-being services until later in the academic year, but I regret not doing so earlier. One of the best choices I made was to become a year well-being representative, which enabled me to engage with faculty members and gain a deeper understanding of the available support. There are numerous ways to interact with the staff, and doing so can be greatly advantageous. My most significant insight? Never hesitate to access the assistance provided—you can never have too much support.
### Concluding Remarks
In reflecting on my first year, I’ve understood that the anxiety I experienced—both before and during university—was frequently unwarranted. There are numerous support systems available, from faculty to fellow students, to aid you in facing challenges. Most importantly, I’ve realized that I’m never alone and that a balance between academic responsibilities and a fulfilling university experience is achievable.
If you’re on the verge of beginning your journey at Imperial, embrace the opportunities, seek assistance when necessary, and above all, relish the experience!
