### Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been rather shy and withdrawn, embarking on this new phase felt akin to jumping into the deep end. Now, as I reflect back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, trials, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most significant obstacles I encountered was making new acquaintances. If you’re a future student reading this, you may be experiencing the same kind of apprehension. I recall my first day settling into my accommodation—I spent the entirety of that day in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself. However, as I write this now, I can assure you that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known.

The essential takeaway? Take the plunge. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be ample icebreaker events and chances for socializing to assist you in connecting with others. Above all, be yourself. With such a varied student population, you are sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

#### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of university-level material. The transition from A-levels was apparent, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. At times, I questioned my capabilities, particularly when I observed others studying with assurance.

What aided me in persevering was the realization that everyone faced similar struggles. If I found a topic difficult, it was likely that others did too. The best advice I can offer? Seek assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or instructors, asking for help is one of the most beneficial skills you can cultivate during your first year.

#### The Value of Staff Support

One of the most comforting aspects of my course has been the outstanding support from the teaching faculty. They genuinely wish for students to excel and are always receptive to feedback. While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral care until later in the year, I wish I had done so earlier.

In the beginning, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with academic staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My biggest lesson? Utilize the available support—you can never have too much assistance.

#### Concluding Thoughts

This year has revealed to me that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university was largely unwarranted. With adequate support from staff and fellow students, obstacles become far more achievable. I’ve learned that I am never truly alone and that it’s entirely possible to enjoy university life, even amidst the demands of exams and deadlines.

If you are on the brink of embarking on your own university adventure, embrace the journey, take the leap, and seize the opportunities surrounding you. You’ll evolve in ways you never anticipated, and before long, you’ll find yourself reminiscing about an incredible first year—just as I am now.
