**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with apprehension, uncertainty, and self-doubt regarding what was to come. I was preparing to commence my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, entering this new phase was quite daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it has been full of personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the prospect of making new friends. If you’re an incoming student, this might be one of your top worries as well. On my first day in student housing, I was so anxious that I remained in my room the whole day, hesitant to venture out and introduce myself. However, fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced.
Imperial has truly become a second home for me, and all it required was a few straightforward conversations with others who were feeling just like I was. The most significant lesson I learned? Take that initial step. Even if you’re unsure, there will be many ice-breaking events and chances to connect with new acquaintances. Above all, be your true self—Imperial is brimming with diverse individuals, and you’re sure to find friends who share your interests.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the workload and the heightened difficulty of the material. The shift from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first term to the second was even tougher. There were moments when I felt overwhelmed and questioned my competence, particularly when I observed others studying fervently.
What assisted me during this time was recognizing that everyone was facing similar struggles. If I had a question about something, it was likely that other students were perplexed as well. The best piece of advice I can share? Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. Whether it’s from your classmates or the teaching staff, seeking help is one of the most vital skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Staff Support
One of the standout aspects of my experience has been the remarkable support from the Materials Science department. The faculty truly want students to thrive and are always ready to assist. They are aware of the difficulties we encounter and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year.
Even though I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later on, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Serving as a well-being representative for my year allowed me to build a connection with staff, which turned out to be extremely helpful. There are numerous ways to interface with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the support offered—you can never receive too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting back, this year has shown me that the fears and worries I held before starting university were mostly unwarranted. With the proper support from faculty and fellow students, I was able to overcome challenges and relish my time at Imperial. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I am never alone and that it is indeed possible to balance academic demands with enjoyment and personal growth.
