**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt regarding my future. I was about to commence my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a naturally shy and reserved person, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where am I now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most intimidating aspects of entering university was forging friendships. If you’re considering becoming a student, this may be your primary concern as well. On my first day in student housing, just prior to the term starting, I felt so daunted that I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to engage with others.
Fast forward to the present, and I can confidently state that I’ve made some of the closest friends I’ve ever had. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with stepping outside of my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with others in similar circumstances.
So, what did I take away from this? Taking that initial step is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease right away, don’t fret—there are countless icebreaking events and opportunities to meet new acquaintances. Most importantly, just be authentic. With such a varied student population, you’re likely to find others who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term was exceptionally demanding. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others studying with apparent confidence.
What aided me through this was coming to the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re confused about something, chances are there are others who are struggling as well. The best thing to do is ask for assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Cultivating the ability to seek support is one of the most crucial skills to develop in your first year.
### The Significance of Staff Support
One of the standout aspects of my journey has been the outstanding support from the Materials department staff. They genuinely want their students to thrive and are always receptive to conversations about any obstacles we encounter. Their understanding and eagerness to assist made a significant impact throughout the year.
Though I didn’t fully leverage pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. Initially, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to cultivate connections with staff members. This proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My key lesson? Take advantage of the support offered—you can never have too much help.
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve discovered that the anxiety I experienced before entering university—and even throughout the year—was often unwarranted. There are abundant support systems in place, both from faculty and fellow students, to assist you in navigating the challenges. Above all, I’ve realized that I’m never actually alone.
This year has taught me how to balance academic pressures with personal fulfillment, and I’m eager to see what the upcoming chapters of my university adventure will entail.
