### My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the greatest obstacles I encountered at the outset of university was the quest for friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be one of your foremost concerns as well. On my first day in student housing, just prior to the semester starting, I spent a whole day sequestered in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself.

Now, looking at my present situation, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most amazing friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with a little casual conversation with others who were feeling just as lost as I was.

So, what’s the lesson here? The most crucial action you can take is to make that initial move. If you’re feeling apprehensive or uncertain, fear not—there will be a multitude of icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Above all, just be genuine. With such a varied student population, you’ll inevitably meet individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the demands of the curriculum and the heightened complexity of the material. There was a significant leap from A-levels, and an even more considerable jump from the first term to the second. It’s common to feel swamped or question your skills, particularly when you observe others intensely hitting the books.

What assisted me in pushing through was the understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If something confounds you, there’s a good chance that others are grappling with it as well. The optimal step you can take is to reach out for assistance—whether it be from classmates or lecturers. Learning to seek aid is among the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### Valuing Support from Faculty

A standout aspect of my experience has been the exceptional support from the Materials department staff. They truly wish for students to thrive and comprehend the hurdles we encounter. Over the year, they kept open channels of communication with us, addressing our worries and providing guidance.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. A proactive step I did take at the beginning was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely advantageous. There are numerous opportunities to interact with faculty, and taking advantage of them can greatly enrich your university experience. My main takeaway? Utilize the support offered—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Reflections

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve recognized that many of the anxieties I harbored—both prior to and during university—were unfounded. There are extensive support systems available, from staff to fellow students, to guide you through the challenges. Most importantly, I’ve realized that I’m never isolated, and enjoying university life amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines is indeed possible.

If you’re on the brink of starting your university adventure, my counsel is straightforward: take that plunge, seek help when needed, and embrace the journey. You’ll develop in ways you never anticipated.
