**Contemplating My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and trepidation regarding what was to come. As a first-year student on the verge of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link), I was stepping into uncharted territory. Historically, I hadn’t been one to eagerly embrace new experiences, and the thought of beginning university felt quite intimidating. However, reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a time filled with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing
One of the most significant difficulties I encountered initially was forming friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, you may share the same apprehensions regarding social interactions. On my inaugural day in student housing, I spent countless hours in my room, far too hesitant to venture outside and introduce myself. However, as I reflect today, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had.
Imperial has become like a second home, and all it required was for me to step beyond my comfort zone and initiate small chats with others who were experiencing similar feelings. The essential lesson I learned? Take that plunge early. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, be authentic—Imperial is filled with diverse individuals, and you’re sure to find companions who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another major challenge was adjusting to the demands of university coursework and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was quite apparent, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel daunted or question your capabilities, especially when observing others study and assume they have everything sorted.
What aided me during this time was the understanding that I wasn’t alone in my struggles. If I found a concept difficult, it was likely that others were too. The best piece of advice I can offer? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether it’s from classmates, professors, or tutors, seeking help is one of the most beneficial skills you can cultivate during your first year.
### The Value of Staff Support
A particularly reassuring element of my course has been the remarkable support from the teaching staff. The Materials Science department is populated with individuals who genuinely care about students’ success. They are aware of the challenges we meet and keep lines of communication open throughout the year to address any issues.
Although I didn’t fully utilize pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I also assumed the role of a well-being representative for my year, which allowed me to interact more with staff members. Developing relationships with your lecturers and tutors can be immensely beneficial, and there are numerous ways to achieve this. My major takeaway? Utilize the resources and support at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I felt before starting university was mostly unfounded. There are numerous support systems available, from staff to fellow students, to help ease the transition. Most crucially, I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone on this journey.
