**Insights from My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what was to come. I was on the brink of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been quiet and introverted, embarking on this new journey felt quite daunting. Reflecting on it now, I recognize a year rich with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the primary hurdles I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might resonate with you. I vividly recall my first day settling into my accommodation—I was so daunted by the thought of meeting new individuals that I spent the entire day confined to my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself.

Flash forward to now, and I can assert with certainty that I’ve formed some of the most cherished friendships in my life. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it took was some casual conversation with fellow students who were in a similar situation.

So, what did this experience teach me? First, taking that initial step is always beneficial. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous ice-breakers and social gatherings to facilitate connections with others. Most importantly, stay true to yourself—Imperial boasts a diverse community of students, and you’re sure to encounter people who align with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the intensity of the coursework and the complexity of the subject matter. The shift from A-levels was considerable, and the jump from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. This transition wasn’t always straightforward, and there were moments when I questioned my capabilities. Observing others study fervently can sometimes give a sense of inadequacy.

What supported me through this was the realization that we’re all in the same situation. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely that your peers are too. The best approach is to reach out for assistance—whether from your fellow students or the teaching faculty. Learning to ask for help is one of the most essential skills you can foster in your first year.

### The Value of Staff Support

On the topic of support, one of the most outstanding elements of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the exceptional teaching staff. They are genuinely invested in students’ success and cognizant of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, ensuring we had access to necessary resources.

I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support options until later in the year, but I wish I had started earlier. One proactive step I took was becoming a year well-being representative. This role provided me with the opportunity to engage with faculty members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are many avenues to foster relationships with staff, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the support available—there’s no such thing as too much help!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this past year, I’ve come to understand that the apprehensions and doubts I had prior to university were largely unfounded. There are countless support systems available—from staff to fellow students—so no one needs to navigate this journey alone. Most importantly, I’ve learned to strike a balance between academic obligations and enjoying the university experience.

If you’re on the brink of beginning your first year, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help whenever necessary, and seize every opportunity that presents itself.
