### Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what awaited me. I was on the brink of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who has always been introverted and quiet, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year rich with personal development, obstacles, and numerous enjoyable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships
A significant challenge I encountered early in my journey was forming friendships. If you are a prospective student, this may also be a primary worry for you. I vividly recall my first day settling into student housing—I spent the entirety of the day secluded in my room, too intimidated to venture out and introduce myself. Yet here I am today, able to assert that I’ve forged some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever known.
What was the crucial lesson I picked up? Take the plunge. It may seem intimidating at first, but ample chances to interact with others arise through ice-breaker events and social gatherings. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
#### Navigating Academic Demands
Transitioning from A-level studies to university-level coursework proved to be yet another significant challenge. The workload was drastically heavier, and the complexity of the material escalated, particularly from the first to second terms. At times, it was easy to feel swamped and question my capabilities, especially when observing peers who were studying vigorously.
What assisted me during these times? Reminding myself that I wasn’t alone in my struggles. If I was confused about something, it was likely others were too. One of the best actions I took was seeking assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to reach out for help is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your initial year.
#### The Value of Staff Support
One of the most notable features of my experience has been the exceptional support from the Materials Science department staff. They genuinely aspire for students to succeed and are consistently ready to assist. Throughout the year, they sustained open lines of communication, ensuring that our concerns were acknowledged.
Although I did not fully utilize pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. One of the finest choices I made was taking on the role of a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to establish connections with staff members, which proved extremely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and taking advantage of these can greatly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize all the support offered—you can never have too much help.
#### Concluding Thoughts
As I reflect on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of the anxieties I harbored before beginning university were unfounded. There are abundant support networks available, both from faculty and fellow students, to assist you in navigating the challenges. Most importantly, I’ve realized that I’m never solitary on this journey. Despite the stresses of exams and deadlines, I’ve also learned how to enjoy myself along the way.
For anyone poised to embark on their university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take the leap, seek help when necessary, and seize the opportunities that come your way.
