**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I experienced a whirlwind of nerves, dread, and uncertainty regarding what the future held. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had traditionally been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unknown was an intimidating thought. Reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what insights did this year provide, and where do I stand now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendship
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was the quest to form friendships. If you are a future student reading this, it’s likely a concern on your mind as well. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, just days before the semester began, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to go out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it took was venturing beyond my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversation with those who were in similar situations.
What have I gained from this? I’ve realized that taking a plunge at the beginning of the year is always rewarding. If you feel unprepared, fret not—there are numerous ice-breaking events and ways to meet individuals. Above all, embrace your true self. With a myriad of diverse personalities throughout the course and the university, you’re sure to connect with those who resonate with you.
### Managing the Workload and Academic Challenges
Another crucial challenge was acclimating to the coursework and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a significant escalation from A-levels, and an even more considerable jump from the first to the second term. Being immersed in such a rigorous academic environment can sometimes disturb your self-assurance. You might observe others studying and feel inadequate. But here’s the reality: everyone shares the same experience. If you encounter confusion, chances are many others do as well. The essential thing is to seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson I absorbed during my first year—don’t hesitate to reach out for help from peers and staff.
### The Significance of Faculty Support
On the topic of staff, the professors in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely care about your success and recognize the challenges students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our issues and providing assistance. I didn’t entirely utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had embraced it sooner.
At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year group. This position enabled me to become acquainted with the staff more intimately, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and I highly encourage taking full advantage of these chances. My main takeaway from this experience is to maximize the support at your disposal—you can never have an excess of assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I experienced, both prior to and during university, was largely unfounded. There are a multitude of support systems available, ranging from staff to fellow students, to assist you in overcoming obstacles. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned how to harmonize enjoying my time with the demands of exams and deadlines.
