**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, dread, and doubt regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and reserved, jumping into this new chapter felt daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with growth, obstacles, and abundant fun, I can appreciate how much I’ve developed and the distances I’ve traveled.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting tasks I encountered was forming friendships. For numerous incoming students, this is a primary concern about university life, and I was no exception. On my initial day in student housing, just days before classes started, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet new people.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. The individuals I’ve encountered here—within my course and across the campus—have become like family to me. It all began with small, simple interactions, like casual conversations with others who were feeling just as uncertain as I was.
What did I take away from this experience? First, it’s beneficial to take a chance at the commencement of the year. Even if you feel unprepared or awkward, there will be many icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Secondly, the best approach is to remain authentic. Imperial boasts a diverse community, and you are sure to find others who resonate with your interests and morals.
### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Another major obstacle was adapting to the workload and the challenging nature of the coursework. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second was particularly intense. It’s natural to feel swamped or to question your capabilities when you observe others studying and wonder if you measure up.
What aided me in managing these feelings was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, chances are others are too. The essential takeaway is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty members. This skill is undoubtedly one of the most crucial to cultivate in your initial year.
### The Importance of Supportive Staff
Regarding staff, the Materials department at Imperial is phenomenal. The lecturers and support staff are genuinely invested in student success and are well aware of the challenges we encounter. They are accessible, understanding, and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year to address any issues that arise.
I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, but I regret not doing so sooner. One proactive step I took early on was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to establish connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. Whether through formal roles or casual conversations, becoming acquainted with the staff is one of the best things you can do for your personal development. My biggest insight here? Make the most of the resources and support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
In retrospect, this year has imparted a wealth of knowledge. The anxiety I experienced before starting university, and even throughout the year, was often unwarranted. An abundance of support is available, both from staff and fellow students, to guide you through any challenges. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone and that joy can be found even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
This initial year has been a voyage of personal growth, resilience, and self-discovery. To anyone preparing to embark on their university journey, my guidance is straightforward: take that leap, be your authentic self, and don’t hesitate to request help. You’ve got this!
