**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was laden with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted, venturing into the unknown was a formidable challenge. Now, as I reflect on a year filled with personal growth, obstacles, and abundant enjoyment, I can see how impactful this journey has been. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing
One of the most daunting aspects of university life was establishing new friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, you may share similar feelings. On my first day at the student residence, just days before classes officially began, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too anxious to venture out and meet people. Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced.
The secret was taking that crucial first step. It began with casual conversations and bonding with others who were just as new and uncertain as I was. Gradually, these exchanges developed into substantive friendships. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with breaking out of my comfort zone.
For anyone feeling uneasy, my message is straightforward: make that leap early. If the moment isn’t right yet, that’s alright—there will be ample ice-breaking activities and chances to meet others. Most critically, stay true to who you are. With the rich diversity within the Imperial community, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and ideals.
### Addressing Academic Obstacles
Adapting to the academic pressures of university was yet another considerable challenge. The transition from A-levels to university standards was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel swamped or question your capabilities when you observe others appearing to flourish.
What assisted me in navigating these hurdles was realizing that everyone shares similar experiences. If you find yourself struggling with a concept, there’s a good chance others are too. The best course of action is to reach out for assistance—whether it’s from classmates or instructional staff.
Learning to request help may be the most critical skill you develop during your first year. Don’t hesitate to connect, as teamwork and support are essential in surmounting academic challenges.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
A highlight of my experience has been the exceptional encouragement from the Materials department staff. They genuinely wish to see students thrive and demonstrate understanding of the challenges we endure. Throughout the year, they maintained an open line of communication, addressing our concerns and offering guidance.
Though I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until later in the year, I wish I had engaged sooner. Accepting the role of well-being representative was a leap of faith, but it turned out to be immensely rewarding. It afforded me the opportunity to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be invaluable.
There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway here is to fully utilize the resources and support systems available to you. There’s never such a thing as having too much help!
### Insights Gained
Looking back on this past year, I’ve come to understand that many of the apprehensions I harbored—both before and during my university experience—were misplaced. With the abundant support accessible from faculty and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. This year has enlightened me on how to juggle stress from exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and fulfillment.
For anyone poised to begin their university expedition, recognize that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious. But remember, you’re entering a realm brimming with chances for development, connection, and assistance. Take those bold steps, embrace the hurdles, and enjoy the journey—you’ll emerge stronger afterward.
