**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the path that lay ahead. I was about to commence my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a fresh newcomer. For someone who had always been timid and introverted, venturing into the unknown seemed intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with progress, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment, I can recognize how much I’ve grown and the distance I’ve traveled.
### Building Friendships: Taking the First Step
One of the most daunting tasks I encountered was forming friendships. For numerous incoming students, this often ranks high among their concerns regarding the start of university. I recall my inaugural day in student accommodation, a few days ahead of classes kicking off—I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, and I can assert without hesitation that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had. The individuals I’ve met here at Imperial and within my program have started to feel like a second family to me. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in small conversations with others who shared similar feelings.
What did I take away from this? Making that initial step at the beginning of the year is vital. If you’re not quite ready to dive in, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, embrace who you are. With such a varied group of individuals across the program and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Confronting the Academic Challenge
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the course material. The shift from A-levels to university was a clear leap, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It wasn’t always straightforward to maintain confidence, particularly when I observed others studying and felt as though I was lagging behind.
What aided me during this time was the understanding that everyone else is experiencing similar struggles. If something isn’t clicking for you, it’s likely that others are feeling the same way. The essential takeaway is to seek assistance—whether it’s from your classmates or teaching faculty. This was probably the most significant lesson I grasped in my first year: don’t hesitate to ask for help.
### Support from Staff: An Invaluable Asset
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department are fantastic. They genuinely want students to excel and are acutely aware of the hurdles we face. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us and displayed understanding towards our hardships.
I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until late in the year, and I regret not doing so sooner. At the start of the year, I took a chance by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to interact with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My primary lesson here is to make the most of the support available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I experienced before and during university was largely unwarranted. With the extensive support from both staff and peers, I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly isolated. I’ve also learned how to manage the stress from exams and deadlines while still savoring moments of joy and fun.
Reflecting on the past year, I can see how much I’ve evolved, both academically and personally. Although entering university may seem overwhelming, with time, support, and a readiness to take risks, it can transform into one of the most fulfilling experiences of your life.
