**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with a mix of excitement and anxiety as I took steps to commence my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has typically been on the quieter side, plunging into this new experience was quite intimidating. Reflecting back now, I recognize a year that has been rich in development, challenges, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what has this journey meant for me?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of university life was the challenge of forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a significant concern for you as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, mere days before classes officially commenced, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Now, looking at my present situation, I can proudly say I’ve cultivated some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever known. These bonds have evolved into a second family for me, both within my program and across the university. What shifted? It all began with taking small steps—engaging in light conversations with individuals who were equally new and apprehensive.
The crucial lesson I absorbed is to take a risk early on. Even if you feel unprepared, there are abundant ice-breaking events and chances to engage with others. And above all, just be yourself. With such a diverse environment at Imperial, you are sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Tackling the Academic Trials
Adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of university coursework was yet another significant challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first semester to the next felt even more profound. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you observe others around you excelling.
What benefited me greatly was recognizing that everyone shares the same struggles. If you find yourself grappling with a topic, it’s likely others are encountering similar difficulties. The essential takeaway is to seek out assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. This may be the most crucial skill you can develop in your first year.
### The Value of Community and Support
On the topic of assistance, I cannot emphasize enough how remarkable the staff in the Materials department are. They are genuinely invested in ensuring student success and consistently express understanding of the challenges we face. Over the course of the year, they maintained transparent communication with us and offered unwavering support.
Although I didn’t fully leverage the available pastoral resources until later in the academic year, I wish I had explored them sooner. Taking on the position of a year well-being representative was one of the proactive steps I took early on, and it proved to be a fantastic choice. It enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which was incredibly beneficial. Whether through formal roles or casual engagements, forming relationships with your professors and tutors is one of the best things you can do for your own benefit.
The key takeaway here is to embrace the support systems at your disposal. Be it academic guidance, pastoral assistance, or simply sharing advice among peers, there’s no such thing as excessive support.
### Insights Gained
As I reflect on my first year, I’ve come to realize that many of the apprehensions I experienced—both prior to and during university—were unwarranted. With the extensive support offered by faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has taught me how to manage the stress of exams and deadlines while also savoring moments of happiness and self-discovery.
Ultimately, my first year in Materials Science and Engineering has been a transformative journey. It’s enlightened me on the importance of stepping outside my comfort zone, seeking help when necessary, and fully embracing the opportunities that come my way.
If you’re about to embark on your own university journey, remember that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious. But also recognize that you will grow, adapt, and flourish in ways you may not yet envision.
