**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with feelings of anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the future as I readied myself to embark on my first-year journey in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who had always identified as shy and reserved, plunging into this new chapter felt overwhelming. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a time marked by development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Taking the Plunge: Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered early in the year was forming friendships. For many incoming students, this is one of the primary anxieties about commencing university, and I was no different. On my initial day in student housing, mere days before the semester kicked off, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had. These bonds have become my second family here at Imperial. What changed? It all started with taking small steps—engaging in light conversation with individuals who were experiencing similar feelings.
The most important lesson I gleaned is that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is invaluable. If you’re not ready or uncomfortable at first, that’s perfectly fine! There are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people. Most crucially, I realized that being authentic is essential. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re certain to discover others who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adjusting to the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was acclimating to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second proved to be even tougher. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities when observing others who seem to be studying and thriving.
What aided me in overcoming this was the recognition that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, there’s a good chance others are as well. The most invaluable skill I cultivated during my first year was learning how to seek assistance. Whether from classmates or faculty, reaching out for support can truly make a difference.
### Assistance from Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is genuinely outstanding. The lecturers and support staff earnestly wish for students to thrive and understand the obstacles we confront. They maintain open lines of communication throughout the academic year and are consistently ready to address our concerns.
I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support available until the year’s end, and I regret not having done so earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to establish connections with faculty members, which proved immensely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to connect with staff, and engaging in this can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway is to make the most of the available support systems—you can never have too much assistance!
### Reflections on Learned Lessons
As I look back on this year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. With the backing of faculty and fellow students, those emotions became manageable. I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to find balance between enjoying my time and managing the unavoidable stresses of exams and deadlines.
This year has been a transformative journey, and I’m eager to see what the future brings as I progress in my studies in Materials Science and Engineering.
