**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A little less than a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with a mix of excitement and anxiety as I geared up to embark on my path as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and cautious, stepping into uncharted territory felt quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on a year brimming with development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences, I see just how much I’ve acquired—not solely in terms of knowledge but in understanding myself as well.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting parts of commencing university was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a significant worry for you too. I vividly recall spending my first day within the student residence, retreating to my room, far too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly assert that I’ve established some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced.

The secret? Taking that crucial chance. Initiating discussions with others undergoing similar experiences enabled me to create bonds that now resemble a second family. If this concerns you, put your mind at ease—there will be ample icebreaker gatherings and occasions to connect with new people. The most valuable lesson I’ve learned is to embrace your true self. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re certain to encounter individuals who resonate with your passions and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Struggles

Adapting to the academic expectations of university presented another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university-level studies was stark, and the shift from the first semester to the second proved even more demanding. It’s natural to feel daunted or question your capabilities, especially when you observe peers seemingly excelling.

What proved beneficial for me was the acknowledgment that everyone is navigating the same experience. If you’re finding it hard to comprehend something, it’s likely that your classmates are facing similar struggles. My top recommendation is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty members. Learning to reach out for support stands as one of the most beneficial habits you can cultivate during your first year.

### The Helpful Faculty

Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are truly remarkable. They genuinely care about students’ success and show understanding towards the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication to address any issues that arose.

Although I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support provided until late in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Stepping into the role of a well-being representative was a bold move for me, yet it proved to be an excellent avenue to connect with faculty and gain a deeper insight into available resources. My suggestion? Don’t hesitate to reach out and make the most of the support offered—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Looking back, this past year has shown me that many of the anxieties I harbored—both prior to and during my time at university—were baseless. With the extensive support from faculty and fellow students, I recognized that I was never truly isolated. More importantly, I learned how to navigate the pressures of exams and deadlines while still cherishing moments of happiness and enjoyment.

University is a voyage of personal development, and while the outset may seem overwhelming, the challenges you encounter will forge you into a more self-assured and competent individual.
