**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unknown felt like a monumental challenge. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a journey filled with significant personal development, obstacles, and a multitude of unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the beginning of university was establishing friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may be experiencing similar feelings of anxiety. On my first day in student housing, just days before the term officially kicked off, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly claim that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships in my life. My fellow students have turned into my second family, both in my course and throughout the university. It all began with taking small steps—starting basic conversations with individuals who were experiencing the same feelings.

What did I realize? Taking that initial jump of faith is invaluable. If you’re not ready immediately, don’t stress—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with your peers. Above all, be authentic. With a community as diverse as that at Imperial, you’re sure to meet people who you connect with.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major obstacle was adapting to the heavier workload and the heightened complexity of the subjects. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and moving from the first term to the second term was even more challenging. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when surrounded by high achievers.

What assisted me was the realization that everyone is navigating similar experiences. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The critical takeaway is to ask for assistance—whether it’s from your classmates or the academic staff. This became one of the most crucial skills I cultivated during my first year: the ability to seek out support when necessary.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely wish for students to thrive and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication open, addressing our worries and providing guidance.

I did not fully utilize the pastoral support available until the latter part of the year, and in retrospect, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Early on, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to foster connections with faculty, which proved invaluable. There are many avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can profoundly impact your university journey. My greatest lesson? Make the most of the support systems available—you can never overdo it when seeking help!

### Insights Gained

Looking back, this year has shown me that the apprehension I experienced prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With the abundance of support from both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated.

I’ve learned how to find a balance between enjoying myself and managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines. Most importantly, I’ve evolved as an individual, stepping beyond my comfort zone and embracing the hurdles that came my way.

To anyone on the cusp of this journey: take the plunge, reach out for support, and remember you’re not alone. University is a time for development, and with the right attitude, it can become one of the most fulfilling experiences of your life.
