**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my path as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, plunging into this new phase felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the last academic year, I recognize a transformative experience characterized by personal development, obstacles, and lots of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forging friendships. Initiating university can be intimidating, and if you’re a future student, this might be your greatest worry as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, mere days before classes started, I found myself spending the entire day sequestered in my room, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known. The individuals I’ve interacted with here—both from my course and throughout the university—have become akin to a second family. It all commenced with minor steps, like initiating dialogues with others who were feeling equally anxious.
What did I discover? Taking that first step at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you’re not immediately ready or at ease, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker opportunities and chances to meet others. Most crucially, just be authentic. With the diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another considerable obstacle was adapting to the increased workload and the more challenging material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more demanding. It’s easy to feel inundated or to question your capabilities, especially when it seems like everyone else is excelling.
What aided me in overcoming this was the realization that everyone shares similar experiences. If you struggle with a concept, it’s likely that there are others who share that struggle. The essential aspect is to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or professors. Developing the ability to seek help is arguably the most critical skill to cultivate in your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of assistance, I cannot stress enough how outstanding the staff in the Materials department are. They truly wish for students to thrive and exhibit tremendous understanding regarding the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open communication and were always eager to address our issues.
I must admit that I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered to me until late in the year, and I regret not doing it sooner. At the year’s outset, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to foster connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are many avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My most significant insight? Utilize the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I have learned that the anxieties I felt—both before embarking on my university adventure and throughout the year—were frequently unfounded. With the extensive range of support available from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve acquired the ability to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with enjoyable moments.
To anyone preparing to start their university experience: take that leap, welcome the challenges, and don’t hesitate to ask for help when necessary. You may be astonished at how much you develop throughout the journey.
